Pixar’s Soul: Movie Review

Pixar's Soul: Movie Review

Kylie Dimapan, Writer

Disney’s new Pixar movie “Soul” premiered Christmas of 2020 and it is worth all the hype.

Believe it or not Soul is actually the first Pixar movie with an African-American as the main character, voiced by the one and only Jamie Foxx. Jamie fulfills the role of Joe Gardner who believes his purpose in life is to be a Jazz artist. He questions the meaning of life once he may be at fault of joining Disney’s idea of the afterlife called the “Great Beyond.” Joe refused to believe his life was coming to an end and breaks the boundaries that separates the Great Beyond from the Great Before, where all souls spawn to be guided into their bodies into the real world. Upon Joe’s arrival he is mistaken as a mentor that guides one of the new souls to find their “spark” in life that will then allow them their pass into the real world. Joe meets 22 who is projected to be a failure due to her numerous mentors that were unable to lead her to her spark. She admits that she doesn’t feel like she belongs on earth and Joe uses this to his advantage in hopes of getting her pass to reality.

Though Soul can be classified as a family or children’s movie, don’t let that underestimate the themes and messages that people of all ages can relate to. 22 didn’t realize that there was more to life than what she was being presented in the Great Before until she was able to see the world through a new perspective. Whereas Joe didn’t realize he was too fixated on creating the perfect image of what he wanted his life to be that he wasn’t living in the moment and was taking the little things for granted.

After personally watching Soul I was reminded to be grateful for all I have in my life. Especially during the time being, a significant message for viewers to reflect on at home may be what everyone needed. Soul was a perfectly balanced reality check that was still able to grab my attention with the use of humorous jokes, diverse characters, and overall a different side of Pixar I look forward to seeing more of in the future.
