The School Athletics Department has always had tight budgets leaving sports teams to find ways to raise money on their own or rely on booster clubs. Even required things such as: sports equipment, transportation, facilities, staff and food for games are not provided unless supplied by a parent of the team. Teams get money by doing fundraisers like car washes, gold cards and restaurant promotions to help fund their team. Another way teams get recognized is by having a sponsor which is beneficial. A sponsor can cut costs and can save a lot of time when looking for places to practice and play. Frederick County is the first county to have a women’s flag football team, first in its prime. This is great and is getting pushed to other counties since their sponsor is The Baltimore Ravens which has a big following. Athletic teams can also get money donated by booster clubs to help reach their goal faster. Even with teams finding ways to make money, not all of them make their target goal. One of the reasons for this is that some school boards take five to ten percent out of the total amount of fundraised money. Seems like a small number but adds up over time. One prime example of this is Gov. Thomas Johnson High School football team In Frederick County,
Maryland was trying to change their stadium from grass to turf but required a little over six hundred thousand dollars to convert and start the project. According to school locals, the school managed to cover the cost after some time with a fifty thousand dollar grant by Maryland Capital project.
